Whilst weeding at the city farm a couple of weeks ago we discovered that Greater celandine contains a brilliant orange-coloured sticky sap which is visible in the leaves, stems and roots. From this, its not hard to see why it acquired the common name of ‘Devil’s milk’.
It’s September and the flower spike of the Great mullein plant at our allotment has turned brown, making it the perfect time to collect some seed before they all scatter to the wind.
Begonia maculatas don’t fit the standardised image of a plant that you might see in a biology textbook – for a start the leaves are asymmetrical and it looks like there’s some fancy stuff going on with the flowers.
